February 19 2020 - Post-surgery Day Two morning update

This is reposted from my Facebook page.

First, the good news: Doug made it through the night, which, honestly, we didn't think would happen. He had a VERY rough few hours yesterday afternoon into evening.
Last night's dialysis got his acidosis under control (ish). He's currently receiving SLED (slow low efficiency dialysis, used for patients with Acute Kidney Injury who are hemodynamically unstable), and that's going to go for ten hours; we'll be doing that every day until his kidneys recover (which is what everyone expects will happen).
The goal for today is primarily to get his blood chemistry to the point where they can start reducing the vasopressors we're currently relying on to keep his BP up. In other words, it should be a very boring day, and I for one WELCOME that.
The bad news: he's still in very critical condition, and his care team is maintaining a delicate balance. He's no longer in immediate danger, but neither is he on the road to recovery just yet.
Finally, to all of you who have called, texted, messaged, commented, offered to bring food or run errands, prayed... They say you find out who your real friends are when everything goes to hell, and the past few days have made it clear that we have the most amazing, WONDERFUL friends surrounding us and lifting us up. We love all of you so very much, and we can't thank you enough. ❤️
